Roof Valley Repair

The roof's own gutter — relined, repaired and kept clear.

A valley is where two roof slopes meet and drain — effectively a gutter running through the middle of your roof. Every drop from both slopes funnels through it, which is why a valley fault leaks more, faster, than almost any other roof defect, and why the resulting stains are often dramatic.

Valleys fail in two ways. They wear out: lead fatigues and splits along the fold lines, older mortar-and-tile valleys lose their bedding, GRP liners crack at fixings. And they block: leaves, moss and tennis balls dam the channel until water backs up over the valley's edges and into the roof either side — a "leak" that vanishes the moment the valley is cleared.

We clear, repair and reline valleys in lead and GRP, and rebuild traditional tiled valleys where that's the correct detail for the roof.

Repair or replace

A blocked valley needs clearing, not replacing — and we'll say so. A single split in otherwise healthy lead can sometimes be dressed or patch-welded honestly. But lead that has fatigued once will fatigue again; when a liner is splitting from age, relining is the only repair that isn't a subscription. Relining means lifting the tiles along both edges, renewing the liner on fresh support, and re-laying — it's a proper job, and it's also the natural moment to check the other leadwork on the roof while access is up.

Common questions

Frequently asked

How do I know the valley is the problem? +
Leaks that track along the line where two slopes meet, staining that worsens in prolonged (not just windy) rain, or visible debris sitting in the valley channel. From the loft, water marks either side of the valley boards are a strong signal.
Lead or GRP for the reline? +
Lead lasts longer (50+ years against 25–30) and suits older roofs; GRP troughs cost less, install faster and perform well. On a heritage roof we'd argue for lead; on an estate house either is a sound choice. We'll price what fits the roof and your budget.
Can a valley be repaired in sections? +
Physically yes, and for one local fault it's reasonable. But a valley is one water channel — a new section laid into fatigued old lead just relocates the next split. If more than one point has failed, reline the run.
